Herbilicious

J&S opening doors - Herbilicious

We have worked with Julie and Sue who run J&S for two years. The study programme they deliver teaches the soft skills required by our learners to fully participate in daily life.

J&S provide two different services for us at Oakley:

Horticulture:

J&S teach Horticulture across all pathways of learning, the skills teaching goes towards the pupils accreditation in Life Skills Diploma and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness.

Work based learning:

J&S also provide work based learning on Fridays. The pupils maintain the garden; produce herb oils, chutneys and jams.

The pupils will also be maintaining a Christmas tree farm this year.

Skills for Employment

Skills for Employment teach Construction to the students in key stages 3-5. In the construction lessons the pupils learn basic DIY skills, make items such as stools, jewellery boxes. One key skill is the safe use of tools. The pupils learn the skills and qualities required for the work place.

Skills for Employment also offer work based learning on a Friday. The students are treated like members of staff and are expected to follow a schedule of maintenance.

Supported Internships & Job Coaches

We successfully piloted Supported Internships and introduced Job Coaches during 2015/16 and will continue to build on this success during 2016/17.

Gillingham Football Club

We currently employ three members of staff that are participating in the Apprenticeship Scheme offered by Gillingham Football Club. Oakley has provided the opportunity for the participants to gain the skills required to be a Learning Support Assistant and further their careers as Sports Leaders/ Coaches.

The Gillingham Apprentices have enabled our students to better understand the route of an Apprentice.
