In Key Stages 3 & 4, the form tutor is the key person responsible for overseeing all aspects of the pupils’ education and for monitoring each pupil’s progress. All pupils meet at least twice a day with their tutor throughout their time on the Tunbridge Wells site. The emphasis is on developing communication skills and a greater sense of responsibility and contributing positively to school life and to the outside community. Every effort is made to make sure that the move from a pupil’s previous school runs smoothly and that we deal with any anxieties about the changeover. Taster sessions take place for all pupils before they join Oakley School to make sure everyone quickly feels “safe, valued and confident in a new environment”.
In Key Stage 4 pupils begin to follow more specialised learning pathways that will give them nationally recognised awards and certificates e.g. Entry level, BTEC and GCSE qualifications. Qualifications are offered in English, Maths, Science, ICT, Art, PSHE, Life and Independence programmes and Construction. Whilst focusing on academic development Oakley is still able to offer a wide range of pupil trips to enhance the curriculum, for example to the theatre, Museums & Art Galleries, using local community facilities, Inter-school sports matches and PE enrichment afternoons. The aim of Oakley school is to enthuse and enable all learners to maximise their potential and achieve.
