For the last 3 years a group of Oakley Further Education students have joined The Beacon Academy in Fundraising and the educational trip to the Gambia.
This visit allows the participating pupils the chance to witness first hand the problems that a Third World country faces from an economic, educational and environmental viewpoint. We have a strong link with The Gambian High School and their 6th Form pupils accompany us on the trip. Every year our students help Beacon Academy raise between £10,000 and £20,000 and take it the Gambia to fund projects in villages that they visit. (The young people have to decide what projects to support with the money they have raised and distribute the money accordingly, during their visit). Over the years we've helped them fund water systems, school buildings, equipment and resources, health centre buildings and equipment, health care programmes and many other projects.
