Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
By Wednesday, 9th May our intrepid learners had scaled dizzying heights climbing telegraph poles and climbing walls, as well as working together to create huge models of scooters and helicopters. The fun continued as they were joined by our new Governor, Richard for an afternoon's Lazer battles! The Oakley sense of humour came in handy when we had to trade jokes for items to create a protective covering for a water bomb!
Yesterday, 10th May, was another exciting day at Kingswood, with some literal highs and descending lows!
Teamwork was at the forefront of the day's activities, with the group excelling at shelter building, and producing some very creative artworks using the environment.
Building on their sharp shooting from the laser battles the previous day, the group showed they were just as handy with a bow and arrow, with some impressive archery skills,
But the real highlights were the abseiling, zipwire and the late night disco. Oakley's dance moves were second to none!
The Kingswood group leader, Joe, said our children were the most memorable and fantastic group he had worked with and he will remember each and every one of them.
Everyone back at School looks forward to welcoming what we are sure will be some very tired but happy young people.
Class 4MN have been studying Macbeth by William Shakespeare. To reinforce their learning, they re-enacted the play and filmed it. Mr Gordon Tillman, Headteacher is quoted as saying the film was ‘Brilliant. The best Macbeth adaptation I have ever seen’. The finale to the topic was a Medieval Banquet on Wednesday, 9th May. The Class Team and the pupils all got dressed up, decorated their classroom with props and creative resources they had made or borrowed and prepared the most fantastic spread which they shared with pupils’ parents and family members. An inspiring way to round off the topic, everyone had the most wonderful time and parents’ really enjoyed being part of their children’s learning, we have had some great feedback from them:-
"Thank you so much for the wonderful 'film premiere' of Macbeth yesterday. And the beautifully prepared medieval feast afterwards. Everything was done with so much care and attention to detail...everything was a visual feast for the eyes...Thank you again for the invitation and for a truly wonderful time".
"Thank you for all the hard work which made Macbeth so great yesterday. It was a lovely occasion".
"Thank you all for a wonderful show and a great banquet. It was really nice to see everyone all dressed up".
"Grandad thoroughly enjoyed Macbeth and said it was amazing!"
Our Year 9 pupils are currently away on a residential. For 4 days and 3 nights they are staying at Kingswood Grosvenor Hall in Ashford.
Grosvenor Hall is a complete indoor and outdoor education centre featuring some of the best facilities of its kind in Europe. Set in the grounds of a former manor house in Ashford, Kent the site is a mix of historical buildings and state of the art adenture attractions.
The trip is a fantastic chance for our pupils to work on their communication, teamwork and independent living skills.
As you can see from the photos below, they are having a fantastic time.
On 2nd May 2018 our Chair of Governors, Alan Bernstein, came into school having been invited by our School Council to approve their charter on behalf of the governing body.
Alan was delighted to be invited and as you can see from the photos, approved the charter and launched the vote for a Head Boy and Head Girl.
As well as creating a lot of excitement amongst our children and young people, the process also means pupils are learning about democracy and other important values and life skills, all of which form part of our SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) curriculum.
An enthusiastic group of Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils have been selected to form our new Eco committee. With the support of some equally enthusiastic members of staff, they have already had their first committee meeting, written and launched a new Eco Code and invited a Governor to work with them.
Class 3LW on the Tunbridge Wells site are lucky enough to have a garden right outside their classroom. This term they have been working to make it into a sensory garden so that they can invite their friends across the school to come and enjoy it with them.
They have made sensory boards for the fence from tiles, cutlery, bottle tops and shells and thanks to the kind donations of people from school and their families, they are creating a bottle top curtain. James and Class 4JC have also made 3LW some planters for herbs and flowers.
The garden will be finished off with some butterfly feeders and colourful pictures the pupils hope will attract butterflies into the garden in the summer.
"Congratulations" and "Thank you" to Kim Lonergan, Teacher who ran the Brighton Marathon on Sunday, 15th April. Kim was running to raise money for Oakley School and Hospice in the Weald. Kim ran the 26 miles in a very impressive 4 hours and 4 minutes.
She has raised £710 from sponsorship and donations, including gift aid. The money raised will be shared equally between the two causes.
Thank you to everyone who supported and donated.
