Welcome to our School

Our children and young people are at the heart of everything we do.

A very warm welcome to Oakley School. We are the district Special School for children and young people from 3 to 19 years with a wide range of special educational needs located in our Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge (post-16) sites

Our Mission: Children and Young People at the heart of all we do.

Our Ethos: Work Hard, Be Kind, Have Fun & Stay Safe

Our Vision: To give all our children and young people opportunities to engage, explore, discover and develop their independence – to become confident, resilient, happy and well prepared for a positive and meaningful future.

At Oakley School we are ambitious for our pupils and offer a rich Creative Curriculum that is personalised and offers learning in school as well as in the community. Our skilled and dedicated staff team work very hard to make learning motivating, interactive, challenging and fun, whilst ensuring that all our children and young people feel safe, valued and self-confident. We promote “Skills for Life and Independence” so that when pupil leave Oakley School they are prepared for the next phase in their lives and have the best opportunities.

Pupils' wellbeing and engagement is central to all our decision making and how we structure our school and the interventions we use.

Our Wider Curriculum offers excellent enrichment activities including: lunch and after school clubs, curriculum trips and residential experiences in the United Kingdom and abroad. These opportunities provide pupils time and experiences to develop their life skills in new places and with different people in preparation for their next steps.

We work collaboratively across our school community with our Families, Therapists, NHS Colleagues and other professionals and external organisations to support and meet the needs of our pupils.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find the information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school directly with any queries you may have. If you would like a paper copy of any of the information on our website, we would be happy to provide it, free of charge. Email office@oakley.kent.sch.uk

or call us on 01892 823096.

It is my privilege to be the Headteacher at Oakley School and we welcome you to visit the school so you can meet pupils and staff to experience our very special school.

  • Environmental Oakley replaces Trees

    Wed 05 Dec 2018

Staff and pupils of Oakley School were keen to ensure that the trees that had to be cut down during the summer, to make space for our new classrooms, were replaced.

Having put our heads together, we found the Woodland Trust Community Trees Scheme. We applied for a small copse pack, thirty trees to plant in our field and hopefully create another wildlife area at the back of the school.

We were delighted that our application was successful!

Teams of pupils and staff have been busy planting and Oakley would like to say a huge thank you to the Woodland Trust for providing us with this amazing resource.

  • Children in Need 2018 - update

    Thu 22 Nov 2018

Thank you to everyone involved in the organising of Children in Need day and thank you to all our parents and carers for their support and donations. Together, from the gunge voting, cake sale and donations for wearing our pyjamas, we raised a fantastic £427.67 (compared to £355 last year). Well done everyone!

  • Children in Need 2018

    Fri 16 Nov 2018
Children in Need is one of our chosen charities for this year, so, as always, we threw ourselves into it whole heartedly!  Pupils and staff were invited to wear their pyjamas or a onesie into school for a donation of £1, we had a cake sale, pudsey art (pictured below), a Children in Need song and so much more.  The grand finale of the day was the gunging! We had asked members of staff to volunteer to be gunged and then over the past couple of weeks pupils have been voting (20p per vote) for their 'favourite' volunteer to be gunged!  This year's willing volunteer and gunging victim, with the most votes by a long way, was none other than Mr Gordon Tillman, Executive Head.  The photos below show just what a good sport he was, it's just a shame the photos don't capture the squeals of delight and laughter from our children and young people as they watched.  Thank you to everyone involved in the organising of the day and thank you to all our parents and carers for their support and donations, we will share the total amount raised as soon as we've finished collecting and counting.
  • Oakley's Spooktacular Halloween Disco

    Fri 02 Nov 2018
The Halloween Disco is always a highlight in the annual school calendar and this year was no exception.  Thursday, 1st November saw Phase 2 and 3 pupils leave school as normal, in their school uniform, only to return a few hours later dressed as ghosts, witches, skeletons and even mystical unicorns!  Oh what a night and what a wonderful, family atmosphere, as everyone; pupils, siblings, parents, carers and staff danced the night away in our haunted (dining) hall. Thank you to everyone who came and made the evening such a great success for our children and young people.
  • BREAKING NEWS: Oakley School awarded GOLD for SMSC!

    Fri 19 Oct 2018
On Wednesday, 17th October we had our assessment for the Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC) National Quality Mark and we are delighted to share that Oakley School has been awarded the GOLD standard. If you listen to the week’s Radio Oakley show (under the News section of this website) you can hear the moment we found out and just how delighted we all are with this outcome. You can also read the Assessor’s report (which can be found on this website: Our School Community\Parents & Carers\SMSC).  The report is a wonderful reflection of how fantastic our children, young people and the staff team who support them, are. What a great ending to what has been a great term at Oakley School.
  • Harvest Festival

    Thu 11 Oct 2018
Today, Thursday 11th October, we celebrated Harvest Festival in assembly on the Tunbridge Wells site. Reverend Rich Thomas from St. Phillips led the assembly. Rich is also one of our Governors and so a regular visitor to Oakley School and a familiar face to our children and young people. All donations for Harvest Festival will go to Nourish, the local food bank, which is one of our chosen charities this year. Thank you to all our parents, carers and members of staff for their kind and generous donations.
  • Final instalment of the Year 6 adventure at Bore Place

    Tue 09 Oct 2018
The pupils have loved their time at Bore Place. They all keep asking to stay another night! This morning they have been pond dipping (which they LOVED) and cooking apple crumble. Everyone back at school is looking forward to hearing all about it when they return to school this afternoon.
  • The Next Instalment of the Year 6 adventure at Bore Place

    Tue 09 Oct 2018
Everyone had a lovely evening. Lasagne and Eton mess for dinner and then they went on a bat walk. They had sound detectors which picked up when bats were near and they could see them flying around above them. The pupils then helped Tom make a campfire and toasted marshmallows. Everyone was asleep by 10pm-ish and there was only one child awake this morning at 7am!

  • Update from the Year 6 pupils at Bore Place

    Mon 08 Oct 2018

Everyone is having a lovely time. They have raked hay, harvested beetroot, squash, tomatoes and cucumber. They have peeled and cleaned onions, done some gardening, visited the farm and saw cows and calves (some were only hours old!). They have enjoyed snacking on lovely flapjack and played football in the fields at break time and are now baking bread to go with their dinner! The children are loving it and some have asked if they can stay all week! They are getting a little tired from all the activities so they are going to have some down time after baking and before dinner. Then after their lasagne it's time for a night walk looking for bats and a campfire (where they will be enjoying pop corn and marshmallows!).

  • Phase 2 Residential - Bore Place

    Mon 08 Oct 2018

Skills for Life and Independence is at the heart of everything we do at Oakley School.  We believe that providing our children and young people with opportunities away from home provides them with positive and challenging learning and social experiences in new environments. Our aim is to offer a variety of experiences and progression that help to develop our children and young people to extend their skills and promote their well-being, positive attitudes and self-confidence.

And so, with that in mind, our Year 6 pupils headed off this morning, Monday 8th October to Bore Place.  They have had a lovely morning, hay raking and having a tour of the site.  This afternoon they have some play time and a visit to the farm!  Smiles all round so far, with one of the pupils saying "Oh I love it here!"
