  • Oakley pupils learn all about Islam

    Thu 15 Feb 2018

Friday, 9th February was Term 3's R.E. Day at Oakley School and the theme was Islam.

During the day pupils learnt about Muslim Beliefs and the Five Pillars of Islam. Key Stage 3 pupils also built mosques from recycled materials and Key Stage 4 pupils visited the local mosque in Tunbridge Wells, which both pupils and staff found very interesting.

Everyone came together at the end of the day to share what they had learnt and to show off their mosque making skills!

  • Birds of Prey visit Oakley School

    Thu 08 Feb 2018

On Monday, 5th February, the Birdman (Alan) from Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation brought 4 birds of prey into school. He brought Alaska, the bald eagle and Sparky the barn owl who the pupils had their photo taken with. He also brought a falcon and a hawk. He flew Alaska over pupils' heads in the Sports Hall and let her walk around them on the mat. There was only one rule... no touching! Alan did, however, let some pupils touch the owl whose feathers were incredibly soft.  We cannot thank Alan enough for his visit, we learnt so much about the birds, most of us had never seen them so close before, it was a great experience.

  • Outdoor Learning in the Snow

    Tue 06 Feb 2018

We are very lucky to have so much natural outdoor learning space on our Tunbridge Wells site, its sometimes difficult to remember that we are so close to the Town Centre!  We get wonderful wildlife too; deer, hedgehogs, rabbits, pheasants, foxes, squirrels and a variety of birds including a woodpecker etc

On the morning of Monday, 5th February most of us woke up to snow, which meant the roads and the traffic were terrible on the way to school and everyone; staff and pupils, were a bit later than normal.  However, once we were all in safely, we got the rare experience of enjoying the snow, promoting play and learning together.  Below are some photographs of our outdoor area, taken by our Forest School teacher first thing in the morning, before the children had their fun!

  • Keeping ourselves safe on-line

    Mon 05 Feb 2018

Tuesday, 6th February is Safer Internet Day 2018 across the country.  So, today, to start the week off, our young people on the Tunbridge Wells site  had assembly to talk about how to keep themselves safe on-line.  James Fewtrell, our Key Stage 4 Leader, lead the assembly with a game of Guess Who?  The pupils had to guess who was messaging them by asking lots of questions.  Asking if the person was male or female, young or old, they came to the very excited conclusion that the person messaging them (from the cupboard) was Ariana Grande!  You can image their disappointment when our very own Robert Jackson appeared, looking nothing like Ariana!  As well as the game being fun (and therefore hopefully memorable), it was a great lesson in how we should only befriend people we know and that strangers online are not always who they seem.  James also shared the Oakley School 'Staying Safe On-line' rules, which we will be promoting across the school.

We will continue the theme of internet safety all week, embedding it into our curriculum at every opportunity.  We hope our parents and carers will join in too.

  • Oakley primary pupils learning about the importance of recycling

    Thu 01 Feb 2018

Our Giraffes Class are learning about the environment and the importance of recycling.  They had a really good trip to the Recycling Centre on Wednesday, 31st January. They sorted the recycling collected from the staff room and the dinner hall on the Tonbridge site, into the recycling bins at Tonbridge Sports Ground.

Looking after our environment is something we promote across Oakley School, from the earliest age, as we look to maintain our Eco School status and promote our Forest School and Outdoor Learning curriculum.
