Welcome to our School

Our children and young people are at the heart of everything we do.

A very warm welcome to Oakley School. We are the district Special School for children and young people from 3 to 19 years with a wide range of special educational needs located in our Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge (post-16) sites

Our Mission: Children and Young People at the heart of all we do.

Our Ethos: Work Hard, Be Kind, Have Fun & Stay Safe

Our Vision: To give all our children and young people opportunities to engage, explore, discover and develop their independence – to become confident, resilient, happy and well prepared for a positive and meaningful future.

At Oakley School we are ambitious for our pupils and offer a rich Creative Curriculum that is personalised and offers learning in school as well as in the community. Our skilled and dedicated staff team work very hard to make learning motivating, interactive, challenging and fun, whilst ensuring that all our children and young people feel safe, valued and self-confident. We promote “Skills for Life and Independence” so that when pupil leave Oakley School they are prepared for the next phase in their lives and have the best opportunities.

Pupils' wellbeing and engagement is central to all our decision making and how we structure our school and the interventions we use.

Our Wider Curriculum offers excellent enrichment activities including: lunch and after school clubs, curriculum trips and residential experiences in the United Kingdom and abroad. These opportunities provide pupils time and experiences to develop their life skills in new places and with different people in preparation for their next steps.

We work collaboratively across our school community with our Families, Therapists, NHS Colleagues and other professionals and external organisations to support and meet the needs of our pupils.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find the information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school directly with any queries you may have. If you would like a paper copy of any of the information on our website, we would be happy to provide it, free of charge. Email office@oakley.kent.sch.uk

or call us on 01892 823096.

It is my privilege to be the Headteacher at Oakley School and we welcome you to visit the school so you can meet pupils and staff to experience our very special school.

  • Christmas is the time for....promoting independence

    Fri 15 Dec 2017

With not long to go until the end of term, we have been promoting learning alongside Christmas trips and treats.  On Friday, 15th December, as well as the whole school (pupils and staff) wearing their Christmas Jumpers, to raise money for Save the Children, Class 3ML, pictured, went to visit Santa in the Royal Victoria Centre in Tunbridge Wells. All the children were really well behaved and Santa complimented the staff on what a fantastic job they do and how great the pupils were.  After Santa, the children went to a cafe where they all chose and ordered their own drink and paid for it as independently as possible.

  • Key Stage 4 pupils cook Christmas Lunch for their parents

    Wed 13 Dec 2017

On Wednesday, 13th December, Class 4MN, with the support of their Form Teacher and Learning Support Assistants, prepared and cooked a 2 course Christmas Lunch for their parents and grandparents.  This was a first for Oakley School but definitely won't be the last - it was a great success, everybody enjoyed the experience, the smell of the food in the school corridors was wonderful and, according to the pupils and their families, the lunch tasted even better than it smelled!

We have had some wonderful feedback from our parents and grandparents:-

"Dear Class 4MN, thank you so much for inviting me along to your Christmas dinner.  It was delicious! What a fantastic dinner you all made.  It was lovely to speak with you all.  Thank you for a wonderful afternoon."

"Thank you for a lovely Christmas lunch with everyone.  I had a great time and I think the children enjoyed the whole process very much.  It was a very good idea to get together."

  • Parents and carers enjoy Christmas Lunch together

    Thu 07 Dec 2017

On Wednesday, 6th December 2017 Oakley School once again hosted a very successful Parent/Carer Lunch Club. This was our Christmas gathering in which a group of parents and a governor all helped prepare, dish up and eat an exceptional meal. Donna Blunt our parent volunteer had sourced all the ingredients; there were 3 chickens, roast potatoes, an abundance of healthy veg and delicious gravy, all this was followed by a mincemeat tart and Christmas pudding, covered in a choice of custard, crème fraiche or cream!! The atmosphere was lovely with chatter, laughter, festive music in the background and just a few flushed faces...after all there were a number of ovens on!!

  • We've been learning about Christmas and the Nativity

    Tue 05 Dec 2017

On Friday, 1st December we had another of our very successful, whole school R.E. Days. Last term the day was on Humanism, this term, on 1st December, the theme was Christmas and the Nativity.

Rich from St Philips came to the Tunbridge Wells site and gave an assembly on the theme of Christmas and advent. As part of their learning the pupils made Christingles and did some fantastic art work, which has been put up in the Dining Hall for everyone to enjoy and photos of which are attached.
  • Oakley's Christmas Fair

    Mon 04 Dec 2017
Thank you to everyone who supported this year's Christmas Fair on Saturday, 2nd December; parents, carers and staff who organised the event, everyone who helped set up, run and clear up on the day and all our families and friends who came and made it such a huge success.  The Fair was officially opened by our very own Santa and visitors were welcomed by members of our school choir singing Christmas songs which set a wonderful, festive tone for the whole event.  The event raised almost £2,100, all of which will be spent to benefit our children and young people.
  • Children in Need - we raised.......

    Tue 21 Nov 2017

As already reported, on Friday, 17th November, we threw ourselves into raising money for Children in Need. We had great fun raising money for such a worthwhile charity, a charity that we ourselves have been lucky enough to benefit from in the past.

Our Tonbridge site raised £132.89 and our Tunbridge Wells site £223.07, which in total means we raised a very impressive £355.96.

Thank you to everyone who supported the event and for their kind generosity.

  • Children in Need

    Fri 17 Nov 2017
Friday, 17th November is Children in Need day across the nation and we, at Oakley, are happy and proud to join in and help raise as much money as we can.  We had a fun packed day, with lots of different activities and treats.  It was a Non-Uniform day with us all wearing a combination of red, yellow, spotty, pudsey ears and pyjamas!  The highlight of the day on the Tunbridge Wells site was watching Sophie Rees, our Assistant Headteacher (who won by 'democratic' vote), get gunged!  She was such a great sport, and there were lots of squeals of delight when she started flicking her gunge at all the pupils and staff watching!  Thank you to everyone who organised and supported our fundraising, we will let you know how much money we raised as soon as we can.
  • Once Upon a Time...

    Fri 17 Nov 2017

Our current topic in Key Stage 2 is "Once Upon a Time" and to bring the topic to life, our Giraffe and Bear classes visited Bodiam Castle in Sussex on Tuesday, 14th November.  Bodiam is one of our Oakley House Teams so it was especially relevant!

The pupils had a lovely day out, exploring a real castle and they enjoyed a session called ‘A Knight’s Tale’ where they heard all about the life of a knight and got to try on some pieces of armour!

Thank you to all the staff at Bodiam Castle for such a warm welcome and for making our visit so special.

  • Wonderful, interactive story telling at our Tonbridge site

    Fri 17 Nov 2017
On Tuesday, 7th November, our Key Stage 2 pupils were visited by a Story Teller which was a fantastic treat.  You can see from the photographs below just how much the pupils loved the interactive story telling experience.
  • A visit from Folly Wildlife Rescue

    Tue 14 Nov 2017

On Monday, 13th November, Key Stage 3 pupils were visited by Adrian and Jess from Folly Wildlife Rescue. Adrian told the pupils lots of facts about hedgehogs. He told them that hedgehogs like to eat cat and dog food and they can have goats milk but not cows milk as it's too rich for them. They also like to eat scrambled egg!

Hedgehogs have up to 5,000 spines and they sleep all winter. If you see an injured hedgehog or one out of hibernation you need to call Folly.

They then put the hedgehog they'd brought with them on the floor and the pupils watched it move around, but they had to be really quiet so it came out of it's ball.

The pupils were brilliant; they sat quietly and asked some really good questions. Everyone enjoyed learning about hedgehogs, a lot of our pupils had never seen one before and very few had seen one that close, so it was a great experience. Thank you to Adrian and Jess for their visit.
