Welcome to our School

Our children and young people are at the heart of everything we do.

A very warm welcome to Oakley School. We are the district Special School for children and young people from 3 to 19 years with a wide range of special educational needs located in our Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge (post-16) sites

Our Mission: Children and Young People at the heart of all we do.

Our Ethos: Work Hard, Be Kind, Have Fun & Stay Safe

Our Vision: To give all our children and young people opportunities to engage, explore, discover and develop their independence – to become confident, resilient, happy and well prepared for a positive and meaningful future.

At Oakley School we are ambitious for our pupils and offer a rich Creative Curriculum that is personalised and offers learning in school as well as in the community. Our skilled and dedicated staff team work very hard to make learning motivating, interactive, challenging and fun, whilst ensuring that all our children and young people feel safe, valued and self-confident. We promote “Skills for Life and Independence” so that when pupil leave Oakley School they are prepared for the next phase in their lives and have the best opportunities.

Pupils' wellbeing and engagement is central to all our decision making and how we structure our school and the interventions we use.

Our Wider Curriculum offers excellent enrichment activities including: lunch and after school clubs, curriculum trips and residential experiences in the United Kingdom and abroad. These opportunities provide pupils time and experiences to develop their life skills in new places and with different people in preparation for their next steps.

We work collaboratively across our school community with our Families, Therapists, NHS Colleagues and other professionals and external organisations to support and meet the needs of our pupils.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find the information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school directly with any queries you may have. If you would like a paper copy of any of the information on our website, we would be happy to provide it, free of charge. Email office@oakley.kent.sch.uk

or call us on 01892 823096.

It is my privilege to be the Headteacher at Oakley School and we welcome you to visit the school so you can meet pupils and staff to experience our very special school.

  • Oakley School & the Department of Work & Pensions, Kent working together and winning awards!

    Tue 10 Mar 2020

Oakley School was the first school to allow the School Outreach Team for the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP) in Kent to trial their ideas to promote the "World of Work" and employability skills in Schools.  They worked very closely with Simon Bounds, Phase 4 Leader and other teaching staff on our Tonbridge site and together they created a programme which consisted of a three week course of activities. Alongside classroom workshops, the programme included DWP staff volunteers mock interviewing students. The last day of the programme consisted of a visit to Gravesend Jobcentre and Bluewater shopping centre. During the visits all the students were thoroughly engaged asking some very good questions to the staff.

In recognition of all their hard work and enthusiasm, the Team at the DWP won second place for the Head of Profession Award at The National Civil Service Awards on 6th February.  They were nominated for the Public Service Award which was presented by Sir John Manzoni Permanent Secretary for The Cabinet Office and Chief Executive of the Civil Service.  They also received an extra award for Head of Profession which was presented by Peter Schofield DWP Permanent Secretary and Cross Government Head of Profession.  This is a fantastic achievement as there were only 3 prizes (not bad out of 250,000 civil servants across all Government departments!). The Team were recognised for the inspirational work that that they do within schools and for forward thinking in the way that they work, especially with students with learning disabilities.

Our students got so much benefit from the experience, supporting their 'Skills for Life and Independence' that Oakley School has also readily agreed to run a pilot where DWP staff with disabilities talk to students about resilience and how having a disability should not be a barrier.

  • Warburtons “Values in People” Award

    Mon 09 Mar 2020

For a few years now our friends at Warburtons (the bread people) have supported us at Oakley School with bread making, healthy eating and professional employability workshops, as well as donating enormous amounts of bread for our Summer and Xmas Fairs, breakfast and cookery lessons. So credit where credit was due we decided to write a letter of thanks to Jonathan Warburton himself without the local team’s knowledge. The press department were so pleased with it that they entered the team into a national competition called the “Values in People Award”.

Well, last week Laura and Jess from the Paddock Wood division came into school to tell us that they had WON the award and brought their trophy in! Laura said she couldn’t believe her ears when she heard our Oakley School letter being read out by Jonathan himself!

Well done to all the team over at Paddock Wood Warburtons – not bad to come first out of 4,500 employees!  And a very BIG THANK YOU from everyone at Oakley School.  https://www.warburtons.co.uk/

  • Oakley Celebrates World Book Day

    Fri 06 Mar 2020
Pupils and staff at Oakley School love to get dressed up and World Book Day is one of the highlights of our year.  Everyone looked fantastic and as well as normal lessons, enjoyed the day with a 'Where's Wally' hunt around the site and a celebratory assembly with prizes for the best costumes.  A big thank you, as always, to our parents and carers who spend time and money on the children's costumes and to all the staff who embraced their book characters and helped make the day so much fun!
  • Oakley School pupils helping 'Keep Britain Tidy'

    Wed 19 Feb 2020

On the morning of Thursday, 13th February, Oakley School's Eco committee met and decided to join a Keep Britain Tidy campaign to contact a local business and become a #LitterHero and declare littering as unacceptable!

Keep Britain Tidy had sent us a template letter which we added our personal touch to and it was then printed and delivered to our local Tesco customer services desk by Eco Reps from Maple class during their food tech shopping trip.

In the letter we asked Tesco to join us in the campaign and clear up their car park, but also to encourage their customers to join in too.  We will let you know how Tesco respond.

  • Oakley pupils learning to put out fires!

    Wed 05 Feb 2020

On Thursday, 30th January, our Phase 2 pupils were visited by Kent Fire and Rescue Services and had a great time learning about all the apparatus - we were even referenced on the Service's twitter feed:

    https://twitter.com/kentfirerescue

We can't thank the Service enough for their visit - the pupils (and staff) loved it!

  • Biodiversity – feeding the birds!

    Wed 22 Jan 2020

As part of our Forest Schools work this term Phase 2 classes ( Ash, Elm, Chestnut & Willow) have been finding out all about birds; how to identify common birds, what different foods birds liked to eat and how their bodies are designed to help them fly.

They have designed bird feeders, the weirder and more wonderful the better and then used cheerios, apples, seeds, lard, cheese and dried fruits to make fat balls and rings of different things for the birds to eat.

They put them out all around the garden and woodland areas and then spent time bird watching to see what they could see.

  • A cracker of a Christmas Fair!

    Fri 13 Dec 2019

Thank you so much to everyone; families and staff who supported this year’s Christmas Fair on Saturday, 7th December, not to mention all the local businesses, sponsors and individuals who donated some amazing raffle prizes!  The atmosphere was wonderful—we forget sometimes what a treat it is for our pupils and their families to socialise in a safe and fun environment and what better time of year to do that than at Christmas.

We had Father Christmas visit us, we had a chocolate tombola that ran out of chocolate it was so popular, wonderful arts and crafts and edible treats, made by pupils from 2 to 19 years old, a bouncy castle, books, DVDs, cakes and gifts for sale.

Everyone’s generosity and affection for Oakley School was so heart warming.  Thank you. A special thanks, also has to go to The Friends of Oakley, our PTA, they worked like troopers before, during and after the Fair and as a result raised a magnificent £2,842.79.  Well done and thank you everyone.

  • Oakley School welcomes "Kermit"!

    Thu 05 Dec 2019

On 27th November Oakley School received an early Christmas present of a shiny new minibus from this region’s Lords Taverners' charity.

Many members of the district’s business community who support The Lords Taverners gathered at Oakley School where the bus arrived full of singing and chattering members of the school council. The giant key was then handed over and the VIP’s were taken on a tour of the school where they met many exceptional pupils, got to understand the ethos and character of the school and couldn’t help but be motivated by the energy and enthusiasm they witnessed.

To finish off the presentation the guests were treated to a musical performance from Oakley’s singing and signing choir and an enormous thank you card from the Year 1 Caterpillar Class.

Due to its vibrant “Lords Taverners” green colour the bus has been affectionately named “Kermit"!
